Basic DNA Structure

Picture
DNA strands and the nucleotides form complementary base pairing.
DNA stands for deoxy-ribo-nucleic acid . DNA exist as a double stranded helical molecule and it is made of a series of subunits called nucleotides.
A single nucleotide contains a deoxyribose sugar( without an oxygen atom), phosphate and a base. Each sugar has phosphate and a base attached.
There four bases in DNA: adenine, guanine, thymine and cytosine and they are usually represented by  letters: A, G,T& C respectively. The bases on the two sides of the DNA join together by  chemical bond and it occurs in this format: Adenine-Thymine, Guanine-Cytosine. no other pairing is possible because the bases are complementary.
